“Second Monday” posts give everyone a second chance

We’re almost two weeks into the New Year 2016, and with the fresh start always come a host of New Year’s Resolutions. The sad fact, however, is that by February, most of those sincere promises and declarations will have been abandoned, if not forgotten entirely.  I saw where a friend had posted on Facebook that she arrived at the gym to find no available parking spots, the classes packed, and the treadmills and bikes full. She followed that by saying she can’t wait ‘til February, when things should be back to normal. Studies show most people leave their new resolutions behind by around the third week of January.

There are the usual resolutions; weight loss and getting back into shape always top the list. Goals to get more organized, and to improve personal finances are popular as well. And all are worthy, but for whatever reason, they’re hard to see through to success. So we give up.

But wouldn’t it be nice to have a second chance?

A few years ago, a different kind of resolution trend started with a one-word challenge. You choose a word that defines or leads you into the New Year, and apply it where necessary. So maybe you choose the word LESS, and perhaps you reduce your debt so that you owe less money. You shrink your waistline, or even the quantity of the possessions that own you.

But what if you were to approach this year’s resolutions from a different angle? What if you resolved to give a little more of yourself to others, and to your community?

Every town has numerous organizations dedicated to improving some aspect of local life. Calhoun and Gordon County are no exception. We have groups that help the homeless, kids, animals, the environment, community services, and the arts.

But what most of these organizations are lacking is support. Monetary support for certain, but they also need people who care, who will give of their time, energies, and expertise to support a cause. They’re crying for people who will spend a few hours a month to contribute and make a difference. People who will show up, get in the game, and be a part of something good!

This year we want to challenge our readers to do just that. Here’s your second chance. Choose the word INVESTED. Get involved, invest of yourself. Decide now to give just 5 hours a month to a cause that means something to you. Give your interests free-reign, and see what happens.  You’ll be amazed!

OK, your next thought is, “But I don’t know where to go. How do I start?”

This is where AllAroundGordon.com can help. Start by visiting our Local Links page. If a group in Calhoun and Gordon County has a website, we can link you to it.  You can also follow along over this next year, as we showcase the many different groups that need you. We’ll make it easy for you to hook up. Just check back on the second Monday of each month in 2016, to see which organization we’ve highlighted. There’s sure to be one that’s right to give you a second chance.

But you can also continue to eat better, get more exercise, reduce debt and get organized at home and at work. All the while, you’re helping make this community that you call home an even better place to live. Our New Year’s resolution at All Around Gordon.com is to continue to showcase the good in Calhoun and Gordon County.

Happy New Year!

I love this! What a great idea, I'm sure there are so many groups that need more man power. I will be following these articles.
