Old Fashioned Summers?

Summer a time of fun and play… whatever happened to lazy summers? I remember when I was little I never had as much to do as my children do today.  I would spend weeks with my grandparents, the days were spent running errands in the morning, which followed a set pattern of stops each day. Afternoons were spent playing with friends, a week of VBS and maybe a week of "big kid" camp. We swam, rode our bikes, built forts, and played all sorts of games. That was it.

Except for the one great "event" to look forward to: family reunions. A time spent with family, to see and play with cousins that you might not see but that one time a year. Listening to aunts and uncles commenting on how much you've grown. As we played we could overhear old stories being re-told for the umpteenth time.

As an only child, I always found this time to be comforting, I was able to see that while my immediate family might be small, we were a part of something larger; our family tree, complete with the nutty ones and all.

So while our lives are different; a lot busier with summer sports and lessons, one thing does remain: family reunions.   Last weekend we traveled to one of our family reunions. I watched my kids play in a creek, which became a time machine, taking us back 30 years… where I heard my aunts and uncles comment on how much my kids have grown. We heard old stories retold and compared the then and now of life. But it was nice to realize that some things can remain the same.

What about your family? Is there a family reunion in your plans this summer? Send a photo and include where the photo was taken and a little about your family. We'd love to see and share those.  news@allaroundgordon.com

Speaking of reunions I was reminded the other day that my 20-year high school reunion is this year. I'm not sure how that can be since I'm sure that I'm not even 30 yet. Oh well!  It's another great chance to go on a trip down memory lane, while getting whiplash from how we've all changed.

Is there a high school reunion in your future this year? Let us know about it. We can post it on our community calendar and help spread the word.  I know most classes have websites. Send it to us and we'll post it for you.
