Auditions being held for “Smoke on the Mountain”
By: / Calhoun, GA / Submitted

The hunt is on for seven local actors to make up the cast of the upcoming production of “Smoke on the Mountain” being performed later this fall by the Calhoun Little Theatre. Auditions are being held on Thursday, August 2 and Thursday, August 7, at 6:00 p.m. at the Harris Arts Center.

Four males and three females will be needed to portray characters ranging in age from 17 to 60. The people selected from the auditions will bring to life the musical set in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in 1938. The story centers around the Sanders family, a traveling gospel group, who show up for a Saturday night singing after a five-year hiatus. As they witness between more than a dozen hymns, the perfect persona they’re attempting to project begins to erode. By the evening’s end, the family has totally revealed its hilariously imperfect nature, and have endeared themselves to their audience.

The name of the musical comes from Psalm 104:32: "He who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke" (Psalm 104:32). Smoke on the Mountain is one of the most produced shows worldwide.

No special preparation is necessary to audition, and actors will read cold from the script. Production dates are October 19, 20, 21, 26 and 27. The Harris Arts Center is located at 212 South Wall Street in Historic Downtown Calhoun. Additional information is available on their website or by calling 706.629.2599.
